Report: Facebook to launch personal email Monday
You’ve got mail–on Facebook.
TechCrunch reports that Facebook is set to launch personal email on Monday.
Writes Jason Kincaid, “Facebook is building a full-fledged webmail client, and while it may only be in early stages come its launch Monday, there’s a huge amount of potential here.”
Huge potential indeed. Here’s why:
- Facebook already has the most popular photo-sharing and event-posting applications online.
- Facebook Deals, as we wrote last week, could make “checking in” a mainstream activity.
- Combine that with RockMelt, the brand-new web browser that keeps you connected to Facebook as you surf the web.
Why would users ever log off of Facebook if they can now email friends while sharing photos, posting events, surfing the web and getting deals just be walking in the door?
Granted, we still need to see how @facebook.com emails will work and whether it will be worth it for users to switch from email addresses they’re currently using. More to come Monday.
